Allens Lane Bridge Closure

Governor Wolf ‘s office announced April 23 rd , that construction is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, May 8th, on a project to replace the Allens Lane bridge that carries two lanes of traffic over SEPTA’s Chestnut Hill West Regional Rail Line in the West Mount Airy section of Philadelphia.

“PennDOT has worked with many stakeholders to expedite this bridge replacement project to minimize impacts to motorists and residents,” said Governor Tom Wolf.

Beginning Wednesday, May 8, Allens Lane will be closed and detoured between South Cresheim Road and North Cresheim Road for bridge construction operations. The closure is expected to be in place through September 2020. During the closure, Allens Lane motorists will be directed to use Lincoln Drive, Wayne Avenue, Washington Avenue and Germantown Avenue. South Cresheim Road motorists will be additionally detoured over Emlen Street.

Local traffic will be maintained up to the construction zone. Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout the closure by utilizing the pedestrian overpass at the train station.

Drivers are advised to allow extra time when traveling near the work area because backups and delays will occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent and subject to change.This project was driven by the need to replace the bridge due to deterioration and heavy spalling and has a current posted weight limit of 20 tons.

Road-Con, Inc., of West Chester, Chester County is the general contractor on the $4,663,350 project which is financed with 100 percent state funds. Construction on this project is expected to finish in the fall of 2020.
