Tips From The 14th District

Tips To Prevent Theft From Auto

  1. Never leave valuables in your vehicle, but, if it is necessary, place them out of plain sight.
  2. Place shopping bags in the trunk of your vehicle.
  3. Remove all electronics from your vehicle such as Cell Phones, GPS, iPads, etc.
  4. Do not leave purses or wallets in glove boxes or center consoles.
  5. Lock all doors and secure all windows
  6. Park in a well-lit area
  7. Never leave anything with your home address in your vehicle.
  8. Activate any security devices for your vehicle such as car alarms and steering wheel locking devices

Tips To Prevent The Theft Of Your Vehicle

  1. Try to park in a well-lit area.
  2. Be sure to take your keys and lock your doors.
  3. Never leave your car running unattended.
  4. Never leave your registration or insurance cards in the car and always leave a copy in a safe place at home.
  5. Don’t hide a second set of keys in your car.
  6. Install a car alarm and/or a secondary switch. (KILL SWITCH)
  7. Don’t let potential buyers test drive your car alone.
  8. Register your car with the Police Department’s S.A.V.E. Program (Stolen Auto Verification Effort). This program allows police to stop your vehicle for investigation if observed on the highway between the hours of Midnight and 6 AM, the hours most car thieves operate.
  9. Do not under any circumstances leave a firearm inside a parked vehicle. A vehicle is not considered a secured location to leave a firearm.*

* Leaving a firearm in a vehicle can result in a revocation of your Gun Permit.
