IS MT. AIRY LOSING ITS DISTINCTIVE CHARACTER?

Mt. Airy takes pride in being a racially and economically diversified community. But the recent skyrocketing price of homes have put these properties out of reach for many, particularly Black families.

As a result, there is a concern that Mt. Airy is losing its distinctive character. Some Black residents have even noted a sense of exclusion, that they don’t belong. This is troubling.

MANDI—Mt. Airy Neighborhood Diversity Initiative—is a multiracial grassroots group of Mt. Airy neighbors that has come together over the past four years “to learn more and to identify strategies for preserving neighborhood racial and economic diversity.”
